Cafe Gezellig at 617 Fillmore Avenue on Buffalo’s East Side is a new community-centered bar and café opening in May 2026, founded by Community Beer Works co-founder Ethan Cox inside a grand historic building at the heart of Buffalo’s former Polish-American epicenter, directly across from the Adam Mickiewicz Library and Dramatic Circle. Drawing inspiration from Belgian bar culture and Japanese jazz bars, Gezellig — a Dutch word meaning warmth, coziness, and good company — is designed as a purely Buffalo hangout that encourages thinking as much as drinking, featuring a full bar, custom-roasted coffee, and a casual menu of mac and cheese, soups, salads, and small snacks in a chill, communal atmosphere built for East Side residents, activists, and neighbors. With a mission to rebuild community connections on Buffalo’s East Side, Cafe Gezellig is a one-of-a-kind neighborhood gathering space that blends Buffalo beer culture, independent coffee, and civic spirit in one of the city’s most historically significant corridors.
