Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge is part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System, a network of lands set aside for the benefit of native wildlife and plants. Established in 1958, the refuge protects habitat mainly for migratory birds, but also other benefitting wildlife and people. Located between Buffalo and Rochester, Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge has been described as one of the best kept secrets of Western New York! The refuge offers hiking through scenic trails, birdwatching, and wildlife photography opportunities (especially during spring and fall migration when waterfowl and songbirds are abundant). If you’re looking for something more active, you can bike along the Feeder Road, kayak or canoe along Oak Orchard Creek, or go fishing at Ringneck Marsh. In winter, the refuge shifts gears with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There are also free programs and events throughout the year. Stop by the Visitor Center at 1101 Casey Road, Tuesday-Saturday, 9:00am-4:00pm, to explore our exhibits and find helpful information including maps, brochures, birding checklists and restrooms. The refuge is free and open to the public from sunrise to sunset, year-round.
